As a recruiter, it is of course not unusual to get a call from a client asking for help. In the last couple of months, however, I have seen a marked increase in the number of new contacts phoning in because their current methods are not delivering the right results.

On the other side of the desk, in a similar vein, I’m having conversations with potential candidates holding out for in some cases a very small amount of money or just 2 extra days holiday.

One thing both parties have in common – is the need to be more flexible.

Take Personal Injury roles as an example. If your law firm isn’t attracting the level of experience that you want or the person with the specific skill-set needed, then look to attract someone from another practice area who would welcome the opportunity to be retrained and would likely be more open on salary for better career prospects. Or look at a Paralegal instead of a solicitor and so on.

If you are a candidate looking to get out of PI work, consider the fact that many are doing the same. That means competition to leave is high and therefore if you were to remain within the PI practice area, your career prospects in PI just got a lot better. A top tier firm is a distinct possibility in a candidate short market.

If you find yourself in the same situation six months from now you might end up looking back and wondering what might have happened if you had been more flexible.
