The team at AmbiPro have collectively, over 50 years recruitment experience. Last week at an ‘AmbiProactive’ meeting we were talking about what the very best law firms do to hire and retain top talent. While not trying to teach granny to suck eggs “the top ten tips” that came out of that session makes for an easy reminder for you if you are an employer. If you are a candidate, any future employer that does these is a great place to join. Here are the first five. Look out for article number two on the subject.
1. Onboarding starts when a resignation takes place. The best firms will take a good look at the situation and work out why it has happened with an objective head on. And then where necessary review the job description.
2. Have a consistent recruitment process no matter the urgency. Having three rounds of interviews because it is a strategic hire for growth, but then switching to telephone screening and one interview because someone has walked out, despite it still being for the same role, is a recipe for disaster.
3. Letting people down in a way that enhances your reputation takes a lot of effort. In today’s social media savvy age ( just take a quick read of glass door) it can be easy to hire one out of 50 applicants without thinking how you have let down the other 49. Good manners and effective, timely communication costs nothing, yet can kneecap a business when done wrong.
4. Hiring for behaviours over skills and experience can mean some potential world beaters get a rung on the ladder. It is an old yet accurate cliché, that the perfect candidate does not exist. The ideal employee does, and that’s when their behaviours match your company DNA. Focussing on behaviours and positives of the skills and experience a potential hire can offer, rather than what they are lacking, will ensure increased productivity and retention rates.
5. Having a diverse workforce isn’t just a word that could mean you keep your company out of court. Diversity, when done positively, brings out the best in every single member of the team and workforce. Challenging people’s thoughts and beliefs will spill over to work and that means positive creativity.
